Lawrence J. Cohen (Larry)
Director, The MacroMonitor
Larry Cohen is Director of The MacroMonitor, the largest and longest running syndicated program on household financial needs in the US today. Since 1978, this program has been providing a holistic understanding of the evolution of consumers’ financial needs. Since 1984 when he started working at Gallup, Larry has focused exclusively on the financial services area, providing analysis of, and insight into strategic planning, marketing, product ideation and design, behavioral economics, market research, macroeconomics, and competitive intelligence for virtually every major financial services organization.
Larry consults with all types of financial services institutions, associations, government agencies, and universities on consumer financial services including macroeconomic trends, psychographic segmentations, new product and market innovations, strategic planning, direct marketing, etc. Representative clients include AARP, Allstate, American Express, Ameriprise, Bank of America, Capital One, JP Morgan Chase, Schwab, Citicorp, Fidelity, John Hancock, Merrill Lynch, MetLife, Prudential, Vanguard, and Wells Fargo.
Prior to working at RFI, Larry was Vice President and Director of the Consumer Financial Decisions (CFD) with Strategic Business Insights (SBI), an employee-owned spin-off from SRI International. Larry managed and marketed all related syndicated research programs, including The MacroMonitor, The Hispanic MacroMonitor, The LGBTQ MacroMonitor, The Asian MacroMonitor, Wealthy Boomers: The next Generation of Wealth, The Changing Nature of Retirement, The Future of Life Insurance, Marketing Annuities, Investor Styles: A Psychographic Segmentation of Investors, and a host of others.
Prior to joining SRI, Larry was vice president of Phoenix-Hecht/Gallup for five years. In this role, Larry was responsible for marketing, project development, proprietary projects, customer service, analysis, and presentations for proprietary and all syndicated financial services research. Larry also spent five years serving as vice president of marketing and senior project director for the Financial Services Division of The Gallup Organization. In this role, Larry held responsibility for marketing, project management, customer service, analysis and presentation of results. Prior experience includes three years serving as senior study director for Louis Harris and Associates, three years serving as study manager for all telephone surveys at The Roper Organization, and four years as survey research manager for Mathematica Policy Research.
Larry holds an M.B.A. from the Graduate School of Management of Rutgers University (Newark, New Jersey), and a B.A. in interdisciplinary social sciences from Syracuse University (New York). He is past president of the New Jersey chapter of the American Association of Public Opinion Research (AAPOR), and a national AAPOR member since 1976. He has been a World Future Society member since 1980. Brian is the author of the critically acclaimed and award-winning book, “Getting Paid To Wait – Bigger Social Security Benefits the Simple and Easy Way.” His book received the International Book Award as the best book in 2015 in the Business/Personal Finance category. It also received the Eric Hoffer award as one of the best business books in 2015. He has been interviewed and written articles that have appeared in various national media publications, including Forbes, Huffington Post, U S News, Newsday, Investment News and the Retirement Income Journal. Brian is a nationally recognized expert on Social Security and a frequent speaker and media commentator on this topic. He has more than 30 years of experience in the financial services industry, and is President of Filtech, a consulting company specializing in Social Security claiming strategies that helps retirees maximize their Social Security income.
Brian’s background includes high-level executive management positions at several Fortune 500 financial services companies, including President and CEO of Key Bank’s investment subsidiary, Key Investments, and National Sales Manager for New York Life’s retirement income security division. Mr. Doherty is a sought-after Public Speaker and has been a featured speaker for Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo, UBS, Citibank, New York Life and numerous other Financial Institutions. He received his MBA in Finance from Syracuse University and BS in Accounting from Elmira College.
